Performing Rights Society (PRS) Promoters Award 2011/2012

For the two previous years we received one of the PRS Promoters Awards, which helped us book artists that might not have appeared at the club. Due to the valiant efforts of Kathryn Shackleton, having applied to the PRS in 2011, we were again successful in September last year in receiving an award of £1,000 for the current season. The award scheme is administered by Jazz Services.

So far in the series of concerts being presented under the PRS umbrella for 2011/12 this has seen performances firstly by Kairos 4tet in September last year and then in October the Alex Wilson Trio.

The next PRS concert take place in January with the quartet of pianist Zoe Rahman, followed by the next concert at the beginning of February by Arnie Somogy’s Ambulance.

Bobby Wellins CD Time Gentlemen Please

This latest CD by Bobby, released on Trio Records label, was recorded during the day on 8th June 2010 at our regular weekly venue at Friends Provident by Andy Cleyndert.

Dedicated to the late Martin Drew, the quartet features the American based British drummer Mark Taylor, who at the time was back in the UK on a short visit. A video of the recording, taken by Andy, can be found by visiting www.triorecords.co.uk. Copies of the CD are still available from ourselves on any Thursday evening at the special price of £10.

Menuhin Hall

We have since 2006 been privileged to present each year a concert at this superb 300 seater acoustic venue, based on the site of the Yehudi Menuhin School in Stoke d'Abernon. Our connection with the Menuhin was instigated by the late John Usher, who for many years was at the forefront of the local arts scene in the Mole Valley area Previous concerts have featured Stan Tracey performing his own composition Under Milk Wood, John Taylor and Gwilym Simcock, Acoustic Triangle, Cleo Laine and Acker Bilk, with the most recent concert being a sell-out performance by John Williams and John Etheridge. Watch this space for details of our October 2012 concert.

Venue Name

Following a corporate change of name, the venue is now known as Friends Life Sports and Social Club. As you approach the venue from Pixham Lane both the flag and entrance sign show Friends Life, replacing the previous name of Friends Provident.

1st March - Saxophonist Tim Whitehead’s Personal Standards Quartet perform Colour Beginnings. Tim’s composition written and first performed in 2009 during his year as artist in residence at Tate Britain. A musical journey through the most famous watercolour sketches of J M W Turner.

8th March - Damon Brown/Martin Zenker Ugetsu Quintet - a new international project by trumpeter Damon Brown and German double bass virtuoso Martin Zenker, who are joined by Japanese pianist Yutaaka Shiina.

15th March - Alan Barnes All Star Septet including Mark Nightingale, Dick Pearce and Dave Newton in the line-up.

22nd March - The return of the joint Anglo-American quartet of New York based pianist Frank Giasulo and saxophonist Art Themen, one of the stalwarts of the British jazz scene.

29th March - Stan Sulzmann Big Band plays Brit Jazz – this 19-piece cross generation band features establishes players like Henry Lowther and Nikki Iles alongside some exciting newcomers including Lewis Wright, Freddie Gravita and Tim Giles.

Watermill Jazz Young Composers Award 2012

Watermill Jazz presents 47 quality jazz gigs a year in Dorking, Surrey. To continue our support for young jazz musicians and composers, we are delighted to announce the Watermill Jazz Young Composers Award 2012 offered in association with the National Youth Jazz Collective.

The award consists of 2 cash prizes for wholly original jazz compositions written for:

• Jazz Octet

(trumpet, trombone, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, piano, bass and drums).

• 1st Prize £500

• 2nd Prize £250

Applicants must be 19 years of age or under on the 30th September 2012. The finalists must be able to attend a rehearsal in Dorking, Surrey from 10am on 13th September 2012 followed by an evening gig at which their works will be performed by members of the National Youth Jazz Collective, led by the Collective’s Founder and Artistic Director, Issie Barratt and pianist and composer Nikki Iles.

The winners will be interviewed about their compositions and the evening will conclude with a second performance of the winning 2 entries.

Means tested travel bursaries will be available. Finalists under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Applicants aged 16 and under can also apply to have their chaperone’s travel costs covered.

The closing date for entries is 13th July 2012.

The judging panel will consist of jazz composers/educators Issie Barratt and Nikki Iles and Watermill Jazz Chairman Roger Hind.

The shortlisted compositions will be rehearsed at UEA during the National Youth Jazz Collective’s Summer School in August 2012.

Each composer should submit one composition arranged for jazz octet (trumpet, trombone, alto sax, tenor sax, baritone sax, piano, bass and drums) which should last between 5 and 10 minutes in performance and should allow space for improvised solos from chord symbols1 etc.

We were delighted to subsequently hear last month that the quartet led by Adam Waldmann, were winners in the jazz category of the 2011 MOBO Awards. The recent concert by Alex Wilson Trio was also under the PRS umbrella.

The next PRS concert takes place in January with the quartet of pianist Zoe Rahman from the hugely successful concert at the end of September by Courtney Pine.

The legacy of Mike Garrick lives on with his son Gabriel Garrick taking over the running of the next Jazz Academy workshop, which takes place at the Menuhin School in Stoke d’Abernon from 27th – 30th December. Full details can be found on www.jazzacademy.co.uk

As mentioned at the foot of the November page, we are closed during December, with the exception of the monthly jam session on 4th December and re-open on 5th January with Sax Appeal.

Congratulations to Paul Lacey’s Back to Basie, who have since details were posted on our website, have won this year’s Big Band Category in the British Jazz Awards, making them an even more impressive 6th time winner.

Also congratulations to Adam Waldmann and his group, Kairos 4tet, who appeared at the club on 1st September and have since won the Best Jazz Act in the recent 2011 MOBO Awards.

Derek Paravacini

We were delighted to be able to support club founder Ann Odell in promoting the special concert on the afternoon on Sunday 9th October by Derek, recreating the music of George Shearing. With the proceeds of the raffle and generous donations received on the day, an amount of £680 was raised for The AMBER Trust, a music charity for blind children. Further details of the trust can be found on their website www.ambertrust.org.

At the end of September Derek had in fact performed at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall playing Rhapsody in Blue and also premiered a piano concerto composed especially for him by Matthew King. The concert was previewed on BBC Breakfast Time and the Lunchtime News, including an interview with Derek. On the night of the concert he was accompanied by the Orchestra of St Johns, with John Lubbock conducting.

Kit Downes trio

Pianist Kit Downes winner of the BBC Rising Star Award in 2008 is a gifted composer and sparkling improviser. A past member of Empirical, he can be heard playing organ with both Troyka and Golden Age of Steam. Kit received extensive media coverage with his debut album Golden being nominated as one of the contenders for the 2010 Mercury Prize. The trio will perform music from their follow up album Quiet Tiger, recently released on Basho Records label. Kit’s compositions are inspired by artists as diverse as Bill Frizell, Bartok, Bjork and Nick Drake. Scottish bassist Calum Gourlay, who has played with the likes of Tommy Smith and drummer James Maddren, known for his work with Gwilym Simcock, complete the trio line-up.

Tony Kofi Standards Trio

Tony Kofi, winner of the best instrumentalist category in the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards, has on previous appearances at the club performed on either alto or baritone sax. His newly formed trio explores the classic jazz standards songbook, with Tony on tenor and soprano sax. Last year Tony was honoured to play tenor alongside the legendary Ornette Coleman in New York, in a studio recording on a CD by Jamaaladeen Tacuma. Tony a member of the World Saxophone Quartet has recently been working with the acclaimed South African pianist Abdullah Ibrahim. The trio’s fresh vibrant sound and lyrical re-arrangements are reminiscent of the Sonny Rollins trio featuring Max Roach. Dave Chamberlain, formerly double bassist with Stacey Kent, currently plays with Richard Pite’s 100 Year’s of Jazz, whilst American born drummer Rod Youngs, now living in the UK, appeared last year with Gary Crosby’s Tomorrow’s Warriors Quartet.

Kyle Eastwood Quintet

Kyle Eastwood, growing up in Carmel, California, was immersed in jazz at an early age his father Clint Eastwood, the internationally acclaimed actor and film director being a jazz enthusiast and attendee of the Monterrey Jazz Festival since it began in 1958. Also an accomplished composer, Kyle has written various soundtracks including the Academy Award winning films Mystic River and Million Dollar Baby. This concert is part of an exclusive European tour, taking in London’s Ronnie Scott’s Club and featuring music from the band’s fourth CD for Candid Records, recorded in France in September last year.
